How To Listen To Jazz | Saturdays: July 18th & August 8th
A Young People’s Record Listening Party
For young new listeners and jazz fans interested in learning more about the music of Louis Armstrong and his contemporaries, How To Listen To Jazz is the event for you! This is a specially catered listening session featuring many original 78rpm records curated by The Hot Club of New York. Matthew “Fat Cat” Rivera will be providing context for these historical recordings as listeners sit back and enjoy the sweet sounds of shellac. This series will occur on July 18th and August 8th at 2:00pm at the Louis Armstrong Centre. Admission is free, but please reserve your spot here:
Trumpet Discovery Day | July 25
Kids ages 8-14 (no prior experience required)
Join us this summer for Trumpet Discovery Day. The free two-hour program offers a first dip into the art of creating music on the trumpet!
Saturday, July 25 – 11AM – 1PM
Come learn inside stories of Louis off-stage, about his music and friends, visit his house, and enjoy a first-hand experience with the trumpet led by a stellar jazz artist in New York City. This fun two-hour long program has been created for kids 8-14 years-old.
All levels are welcome. To register, complete the registration form. You will receive additional program information and instructions after you complete the registration form.

Summer Rehearsals | Saturdays: July 18th & August 8th
Returning or advanced trumpet students
For current students of the Trumpet Learning Program or advanced trumpet students from outside programs, we are offering a complimentary rehearsal day to keep your chops in shape this summer! These rehearsals will consist of an hour and a half group lesson with our instructors, special guests and a full band!
All levels – with Bria Skonberg on July 18 at 12:30pm
All levels – with Ella Bric on August 8 at 12:30pm.
PLEASE NOTE: These rehearsals will occur right before the How To Listen To Jazz series, happening at 2:00pm on the same days. Please consider joining the listening session after your rehearsal!
(4-Day) Trumpet Discovery Camp | August 17 – 20
Kids ages 8-14 (All levels)
A four-day camp for kids to go all in on the trumpet! Every morning from August 17th to 20th, campers will work on brand new repertoire, collaborate with renowned jazz artists, learn the fascinating history of jazz through creative hands-on activities, tour Louis Armstrong’s historic house, and perform with a live band! Don’t miss this all-inclusive week on all things trumpet! Registration forms can be filled out HERE. (Full Camp $75/ Corona/Elmhurst residents $35)
Fall 2026 – Schedule
The Trumpet Learning Program is offered to children ages 8-16. Beginner, Intermediate I, Intermediate II Band, and Performance level sessions help students master the basics, refine their skills and deepen their love for music. Eight-week (8) sessions are offered in the Fall, Winter and Spring.
Join Season 10 (Spring 2026) of the Trumpet Learning Program! (8-16 years-old) class meets once a week, starting September 19 to November 14, 2026 . Don’t miss this wonderful opportunity to give your child the joy of music. Register now!
Cost: $75 entire course / $15 per class
Discounted Tuition for residents of Corona (11368), Elmhurst (11373, 11370), and East Elmhurst (11369): $35 entire course / $5 per class
Beginner Class: Students have not received trumpet lessons before or have not played in over a year, and will need to learn posture, fingering, embouchure, and other fundamentals.
Saturdays, September 19 – November 14, 10:00 AM – 10:50 AM
Intermediate I: Students are able to fluently play C major scale, chromatic scale from C to G. They can partially play the basic class repertoire, and understand the basics of playing in an ensemble (intonation, volume, rhythm). These students will work on developing a warm-up routine and practice daily.
Saturdays, September 19 – November 17, 11:00 PM – 12PM
Intermediate II Band: Students are able to fluently play C major scale, chromatic scale from C to G They can play the entire basic class repertoire, and understand the basics of playing in an ensemble (intonation, volume, rhythm). These students should have a warm-up routine and practice daily.
Saturdays, September 19 – November 14, 12:15 PM – 1:15PM
Performance Class: Students can fluently play C, D, F, and G major scales, and chromatic scale from C to C. They know all of the class repertoire, and have experience learning and practicing new songs. They should be able to play the melody of these songs a capella with good sound, rhythm, and all the right notes. These students should have a warm up routine and practice daily.
Saturdays, September 19 – November 14, 1:30 PM – 2:30 PM (by Invitation only)

Learn About Louis
At the age of seven, thanks to the generosity of the Karnofsky family, whom he worked for in New Orleans, Louis got his salary advanced to purchase his first cornet. His first notes filled his beaten home, where he lived with his mother May Ann and his sister Beatrice “Mama Lucy”. It wasn’t until the age of 11 or 12 when Louis started his musical training, thanks to a music program at the Waif’s Home, a reformatory where he had to stay for almost two years, after shooting a gun in the air celebrating New Year’s day. While he missed his family terribly, music filled him with pride and hope. By the time that Louis returned home, he would become the leader of the marching band, and later on would bring New Orleans jazz tradition to be known globally.
