Who are we at the Louis Armstrong House Museum and Archives? 

The Louis Armstrong House Museum (LAHM) sustains and promotes the cultural, historical, and humanitarian legacy of Louis Armstrong by preserving and interpreting Armstrong’s house and grounds, collecting and sharing archival materials that document Armstrong’s life and legacy, developing programs for the public that educate and inspire, and engaging with contemporary artists to create performances and new works. 

What is the Armstrong Now Residency? 

The Armstrong Now Artists In Residence explore Louis Armstrong’s legacy of artistry and innovation through interdisciplinary collaborations and research in the Armstrong Archives. 

The Armstrong Now Artist-In-Residence program supports the artist at every step of their process as they deepen their practice. The truth, vulnerability and creative force displayed throughout the residency will help interpret and activate new dimensions of the Archives and the artists themselves. Armstrong Now artists reframe the legacy of Louis Armstrong through a contemporary lens.

Do I have to have a proposal ready when I submit the application? 

Applicants are not required or expected to submit a proposal, as this residency is design for artists’ to collaborate with the Louis Armstrong Archives and realize a work that activates the Archival Collections. 

Can I submit with a collaborative? 

Yes, collaborations are encouraged. This residency is designed to help artists’ activate archival materials through interdisciplinary collaborations. 

When is the deadline? 

Deadline to submit an application is April 5th by 11:59 pm 

Can I submit late? 

Late submissions will not be judged. 

When will I find out if I was chosen for the the Residency? 

Applicants will be notified of the 2024 Armstrong Now Residents within a month Deadline completion. 

How long is the Residency? 

4 months to realize the artwork (July- October) Performances are not limited to completion during this time frame. 

Will there be room and Board if I am not located in NY? 

No, unfortunately do not yet have the resources to accommodate for artist wishing to travel for the residency. 

Is there an honorarium for the residency? 

Artists’ chosen for residency will be given a stipend to support in the realization of their work with the Louis Armstrong House Museum and Archives.
