Join us in the Garden for a night celebrating the sound and spirit of funk. We Want the Funk! is a powerful documentary directed by Stanley Nelson and Nicole London, exploring the rise of funk music as both a cultural revolution and a joyful form of expression during the 1970s.

Rooted in the political and racial dynamics of post–Civil Rights Movement America, the film features firsthand stories from the legends who shaped the genre—George Clinton, Fred Wesley, Robert ‘Kool’ Bell, Nona Hendryx, Marcus Miller, and Kirk Franklin with additional insights from Questlove, David Byrne, and Prince Paul. Archival footage and interviews with icons like James Brown, Elton John, and David Bowie round out this electrifying musical journey.

Presented in partnership with Rooftop Films, this special screening honors the legacy of Black musical innovation, a legacy Louis Armstrong helped build, and invites us all to move, groove, and celebrate freedom through funk.
